Thanks to Timothy for alerting me that Thomas Nelson’s new Catholic Bible Press has launched a promotional YouTube channel (here’s a link to it). The channel currently features a video on the brand new NRSV-CE editions which Thomas Nelson will be releasing in March. Very tantalizingly, it also features a short video on the NABRE, strongly suggesting that Thomas Nelson expects to release a new NABRE edition.

    1. How about a NABRE “with Apocrypha”? (with the deuterocanonical books placed in a section between the Old and New Testaments)

      1. What about a decent Douay Rheims shipped in Europe at a reasonable price?
Loreto si not interested in Europe probably for good reasons.
Thomas Nelson is printing a Nrsvce and Nabre. Why not a Douay Rheims in comfort print?

      2. Marc that’d be great! I’d love to see that with the the Eastern Orthodox books included also. I’d love a NABRE translation of those books, and Psalm 151.

        But, not holding my breath!

  1. According to Canon Law, those books are supposed to be in the NABRE, but this law has been ignored for so long that no bishop insists on it.

    1. Interesting, I tried a quick search but was not able to find anything. Can you cite the reference in Canon Law?

      1. Looking it up, it’s not kind of law it was such a creep by the council of Trent. The decree said that these books (namely 3,4 Maccabees, Prayer of Manassah, and Psalm 151) should be included “lest they should be lost”

        1. Which of the decrees of the Council of Trent are you referring to? On April 8, 1546, the biblical canon, as set by the Council of Florence (1431-1449), was voted on and passed by a vote of 24 (positive), 15 (negative), 16 (abstain). A few in the majority believed that only the protocanonical books should make up the Bible.

  2. So Mark,

I just sent out an email to them asking if they would consider publishing a premium Douay Rheims Bible in comfort print much like their KJV. Not holding my breath though.

  3. Email to Nelson:

    Good morning Nikki,

I just heard that there is a branch of Thomas Nelson called Catholic Bible Press that is about to publish the NRSV-CE. I was wondering if publishing a premium edition of the Douay Rheims bible in comfort print, much like the beautiful KVJ in comfort print, would ever be considered. There is a lack of premium Catholic Bibles with the exception of Baronius Press and even theirs is not that great. Look forward to hearing from you.

    God Bless,

    Dan

    Response:

I don’t believe that the Douay Rheims is in the publishing plan. Catholic Bible Press is just starting back up after about 25 years, and is focusing on the NRSVCE and NABRE. There may be a higher end edition at some point, but it’s early days.
