Welcome to the fourth week of comparing the New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE) with the Revised English Bible (REB) for the second reading at Sunday’s Mass. As mentioned in the introduction, this will be a chance to compare a strongly literal translation like the NABRE New Testament with a much more dynamic translation like the REB. As the translators continue to work on revising the NABRE New Testament, it also provides a chance to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the current translation (which was completed in 1986).

Sunday, July 8th, 2018 — Fourtheenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)
Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

NABRE:

…because of the abundance of the revelations. Therefore, that I might not become too elated, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

REB:

To keep me from being unduly elated by the magnificence of such revelations, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan sent to buffet me; this was to save me from being unduly elated. Three times I begged the Lord to rid me of it, but his answer was: ‘My grace is all you need; power is most fully seen in weakness.’ I am therefore happy to boast of my weaknesses, because then the power of Christ will rest upon me. So I am content with a life of weakness, insult, hardship, persecution, and distress, all for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

  1. Since you aren’t getting many comments recently, I wanted to post to assure you that the blog is being read and I am happy to see that this blog is getting frequently updated.

  2. I want to agree with Biblical Catholic, Marc. I really like the blog! The REB vs. NABRE posts are really quite interesting. I’ve been a longtime fan of the REB’s predecessor, the New English Bible, and so seeing that translation family contrasted with the NAB’s grabs my attention. Thanks and keep up the awesome work!

  3. Thank you for the compliments and encouragement, Biblical Catholic and Tate! I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the blog.

  4. Hi, kind of unrelated to the post but I found out about a facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible on Amazon. The Gutenberg Bible is a Catholic Bible 🙂
